LEARNING DISABILITY

Dysgraphia– indicates difficulty with handwriting. The person’s writing might be illegible owing to irregular and inconsistent letter formation. It can interfere with the students’ ability to copy written materials from the board and complete classwork. Despite average reading ability, they may be unable to write well.

Dyscalculia– indicates severe deficits in numerical skills. Mathematics involves the understanding of idea of quantity, space, and language which is essential for effectively carrying out numerical computations. A person with dyscalculia, despite average intelligence and good grades in other subjects, tends to underachieve wherever mathematical skills are required.

Some signs may be:

• Inability to understand numerals and the relationship between them
• Difficulty in performing mental arithmetic using the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
• Problems in solving arithmetic word-problems.

Dyslexia-also known as specific reading disorder, is characterised by difficulty in reading or writing a language. This tends to affect the individual’s learning ability since most of early learning involves the skill of reading.

Some signs may be:

• Many mistakes while reading orally
• Slow oral reading
• Inability to understand what the person reads.
• Inability to make inferences based on reading a text.
